Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
