Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
