New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these drugs need to be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
