In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts shaking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
This event occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
