British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."
Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
